User-Generated Content and Advertising Kill Mainstream Media

Just recently I came acroos an interesting article called “Cult of the Amateur”. The author of the book predicts the dismal future of online video. He blames user-generated content and such companies as Google and YouTube in destroying our culture.

“It’s creating an increasingly inane and trivialized culture,” Andrew Keen said. “One imaginary dystopia is that in 25 or 50 years, there will be no mainstream media. There’s nothing inevitable about Hollywood. There’s nothing inevitable about the music industry. The replacement for mainstream media is Twitter, it’s YouTube, it’s Wikipedia … If you read it on the Internet, it likely isn’t true.”

User Generated Content and Advertising Kill Mainstream Media

Having said that, it’s important to remember that Google is a powerful advertising company. Andrew Keen, the founder of Audiocafe.com, says that Google is not our friend, but the next generation advertising superpower.

By the way, J. Coen, senior VP-director of forecasting at Universal McCann, said in a media briefing Tuesday, that the outlook for advertising is not very good. Online advertising and search marketing have “violently” impacted established media as the appeal for marketing tactics closely tied to transactions grows.

At the same time, spending on TV, spot TV, syndicated TV, spot radio and newspapers decreased in the first quarter.

In short, the time will show. It’s not who’s right, but who’s left that wins.
