Interview With Mike Parker, eBaum’s World Content Manager

Interview With Mike Parker, eBaums World Content ManagerAs you know, I have a particular interest in eBaum’s World. I have managed to reach Mike Parker who works in the content department and also works with media relations for eBaum’s World and he kindly agreed to answer my questions about eBaum’s World:

eBaum’s World provides so many funny videos, pics, jokes & so on. Do you ever get bored with the job?

Not at all!  Knowing that we are providing entertainment to all of our users is great.  Its amazing that after all the videos watched and all the pictures we’ve seen, there is always something fresh to be found and sent out to the millions who visit eBaum’s World.

eBaum exists for 8 years by now. Could you tell us, how big your community is and how many uploads do the users perform per day?

Since the end of 2007 when eBaum’s World, has allowed users to register to receive a multitude of perks, including uploading their own media, we have registered over half a million users.  Of course we have a very strong following of nonregistered users as well bringing our daily average to near a million users.
With all these users logging on to check out our site we get thousands of submissions each day, which include videos, pictures, games, jokes, etc.

How do you manage to check the copyright for every upload?

We have a very diligent media department that is constantly checking for copyrighted material.  When something is found the media is removed and the user notified of their infraction.

I see, you’re giving prizes away for the points users get for every upload. Could you tell us more about this? What was the most unusual thing a user got?

We pride ourselves in giving back to our users, so we have come up with a point system that gives our “eRep Points” away for virtually any action taken on the site.  Some actions earn more points of others of course, such as uploading a video earns 50 points and viewing a media earns 1 point.  Also, users earn points for views on their content, so there is a healthy ‘battle’ to get featured on our frontpage.
We feel our “eRep Store” has the best selection of items for our users to choose from.  Just think of earning a new laptop, camera, or even a cruise for just surfing eBaum’s World!!

An up-to-date question: do the recent financial crisis somehow affect your company?

While it is a very difficult time for many people, we hope we can relieve some of the stress by providing the very best in humor and entertainment the web has to offer.

And finally: what is your favourite thing on eBaum?

Very difficult to answer but I’ll go with…
Bubb Rubb and the Leprechaun videos are probably my favorite clips on the site.

I wish long life & billions of funny stuff to eBaum! Thank you, Mike. It was pleasure to talk to you.

Why I Want My MTV And Do NOT Want YouTube

Why I Want My MTV And Do NOT Want YouTubeAbout a week ago a new, similar to YouTube service has been launched by Viacom’s MTV . MTVmusic.com is a very clean, simple, good looking site full of music videos only which vary from vintage videos like Elvis Presley’s “Baby I Don’t Care” to the most recent like Radiohead’s live videos “From The Basement“. Still there is an opinion that the majority of people will continue using YouTube for music videos. Here are some reasons why I strongly recommend MTVmusic:

  1. On MTVmusic.com you have ability of watching full length music videos in good quality which is not quite true with YouTube, where you have to sort for hours good ones out of the trashy search results. I always get extremely nervous when instead of watching a music video I have to stare at some crappy slideshow made by a fan. I want REAL music videos and NOT fan art!
  2. It’s much easier to search! I think you happened to face the problem of not knowing the proper spelling of a band/ song name (usually with the new ones) and on MTVmusic they have a feature of browsing bands by the first letter. Try to search for “R” or “S” on YouTube, I bet it will take you a month to bump into Radiohead or Sigur Ros. There is also a great feature of browsing videos by genre or poularity.
  3. Today more than 16K music videos and live performances are waiting for you to watch them on MTVmusic.com. It’s all like good old MTV and you call the tune without even paying the piper!
  4. A great feature on MTVmusic is exclusive unplugged and live videos. So far I’ve spent hours enjoying them.
  5. And the greatest thing I love about MTVmusic is that there is no copyright violation there. Can anyone say the same about YouTube? I mean, they run that message saying: “Do not upload any TV shows, music videos, music concerts or commercials without permission unless they consist entirely of content you created yourself. The Copyright Tips page and the Community Guidelines can help you determine whether your video infringes someone else’s copyright.” But why do they have all those music videos then?

Anyway, I think there are many things about using YouTube for music videos to reconsider now, because copyright, ease and exclusiveness really matter. So, if you want your MTV - just go there and take it! ;)
