We can’t always be perfect right? Even some of history’s best architects made mistakes when they designed some of the world’s most beautiful structures. Maybe the ground was too unstable, or adding another 20 meters to the top was not such a great idea, in any case here is a list of five sites that ended up just a little bit different from what the designer imagined… There is another sort of leaning buildings – the ones that are especially created as leaning constructions. In spite of the purpose and idea of the designer, some buildings have become heritage of the society. Here are some videos and interesting facts.
My list would not be complete without the famous Tower of Pisa. It was designed as a bell tower but its main purpose was to promote the town of Pisa. The foundation of the tower was only three meters thick and the soil underneath was unstable. A series of wars interrupted the construction for many years. During the long pause, the soil continued to settle. Rather than abandon the project, builders accommodated the tilt by adding extra height to the upper stories on one side of the Tower. The extra weight caused the upper part of the Tower to lean in the opposite direction.
But it is the Capital Gate that is considered the most leaning building in the world. It is a 525 foot tall tower that leans 18 degrees to the west, 14 degrees more than the Tower of Pisa. And unlike many of these spectacular projects, this one is actually well underway in Abu Dhabi. The building can lean this much thanks to its steel exoskeleton and 490 piles drilled 100 feet into the ground, designed to compensate for gravity, wind, and seismic pressures caused by its peculiar shape.
