MTV news: Viacom vs. YouTube
In few months web users will be able to grab videos from almost all MTV-owned sites, and use it on their own. Viacom, owner of MTV Networks and the Paramount Pictures movie studio, some time ago pulled all its clips (more than 100,000 unauthorized Viacom video clips) from YouTube (the top online video sharing service). The reason is – Viacom is planning to launch its own video sharing website that comprises a great many video features alike YouTube: allows embedding the content onto another sites and blogs. Thus Viacom is able to increase its rating by managing the content itself and, of course, possessing new stuff. But if it is just another site-duplicate, they won’t attract people here. They just need to compete well, and they can win. If Viacom does it right, then why wouldn’t people start going their first to get the clips? YouTube has its name, quality, haunters and rabid commenters on certain videos.
“Viral consumer-promoted video is a powerful thing to (Viacom),” Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said. “An embedding move means they get it - they’re not playing ostrich.”
The company plans to invest more heavily in new networks and digital properties. MTV Networks said it would cut about 250 U.S. jobs to reduce costs and invest in its “television and digital future,” according to an internal memo at the division.
“We need to open up our Web sites and content both for consumers and for other companies,” Mika Salmi, MTV Networks president of global digital media, said in an interview last Friday.
