He can wear the patch - be sure to take it off before going to bed - to avoid crazy dreams. Gum and lozenges also are very helpful. It’s also possible that his doctor can prescribed him bupropion or chantix. He should learn what triggers him to smoke and modify those behaviors - go for a walk, play a video game, whatever it takes to get his mind off of the craving because it only lasts as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette.
