Online Video & Web TV News Roundup: June Edition

Sunday, 15.06.2008

We are proud to bring you some more weird and wonderful news. There’ve been loads of peculiar and quirky rumors and facts in online video and web TV sphere over the last few weeks. So, what events are in the movement and popular?

Presidential elections are gaining in strength. That is an interesting point that the majority of voters enters into conversation (with neighbors, colleagues, family members, passersby, etc.) concerning forthcoming elections just in peak hours.

Ardent casual folks’ speeches and mixed feelings about these elections urge representatives of the “fourth power” on predictions and surveys. Mass media sources want to be the first in the news to report more or less credible prognosis.

An article “Can Google Trends Predict The Election?” by Erick Schonfeld (TechCrunch.com), demonstrates how Google Trends are able to keep an eye on what is going on in the USA. Interesting enough, according to figures, Google can predict the elections better then traditional tracking polls. Unfortunately, the data is true for today, not for the autumn’s outcome.

By the way, “YouTube launches reporter channel, in time for presidential race” (by Eric Eldon), YouTube is launching a new “Reporter” channel, featuring a variety of news related videos submitted by anyone, from amateurs to professionals. The channel is intended to active non-professional “reporters” (students, city-dwellers, etc.) where professional journalists enable to use the “Reporter” page as an additional source.

The most important point, however, is that all of us are allowed to use and create news. Nobody can tell the truth from the lie. Everybody used to trust casual eyewitnesses as well as official viewpoints from the big media.

I’m concordant with the statement “Social Media Still Facing Stigma In Business”. The author emphasizes how social media can help your business to grow and an essential importance to join social media as well. So, old-fashioned employers fear and don’t understand a chance new media offers them to improve their business.

Occasionally news editors make sizeable mistakes being in a hurry. On the one side, in such ways online (and paper) sources of information are deeply eager to make a big stir breaking the rules. On the other side, hardware can also glitch.

Let’s say what curious and hilarious news do strike you? Elections are around the corner. Presidential candidates deserve a place of primary importance to be covered in mass media these days.

As it often happens in such matters, even professional journalists come down to earth and make mistakes. Typical examples are ‘Obama-Osama’ slips. According to Michael Erard, author of ‘Um: Slips, Stumbles and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean’, ‘Obama-Osama’ is “a classical phonological malapropism”.

As it quoted in “The Science Behind ‘Obama/Osama’ Slips”, “ninety-six percent of the time,” he explains, “the word you intend to say and the word that actually comes out of your mouth start with the same sound, have the same number of syllables and have the same stress pattern.”

Even Microsoft Word underlines ‘Obama’. What does it intend to tell me this way? On the balance, I’d like you to able to think for yourself and don’t take everything for granted.

Watch Criminal Minds Episodes Online

Saturday, 07.06.2008

I won’t grossly exaggerate the job of law enforcement agencies if I say that such organizations (including staff) do all the best to protect us from violence and crimes. At the same time, do hope in God, but don’t slip up!

There’re so many different defense and law enforcement agencies aiming at preventing crimes. Most of us are not in the know what exactly they do. I reckon this information can be misunderestimated by common people.

It’s my opinion that such agencies have to serve us faithfully and devotedly. Which of them are known to everybody from movies and TV shows? And which ones are highly appreciated by you?! FBI, CIA, NSA, police?

Some weeks back I touched upon the issue of cops TV shows. You see, I like detective stories and still more tangled plots where everything is hidden to the end of dénouement. Who don’t? Great actors’ play, stunning staff and out of the ordinary scenario are a success.

And what about Criminal Minds? FBI agents always rush to help everybody who got into trouble. Criminal Minds is an American crime drama, tells us the adventures of a team of profiles from the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) at Quantico, Virginia. Originally created by Jeff Davis, executive producers are Jeff Davis, Mark Gordon, Edward Allen Bernero and Deborah Spera.

Content: The tagline of the show is that Criminal Minds focus on the criminal itself than the crime itself. Special agents analyze the US most confused criminal minds and predict their next steps before their commit crimes again. It’s known that writers and producers always turn to real special agents of FBI to make a story clear and probable.

Complete Criminal Minds Episodes and Seasons:

  • Season 1 (22 episodes). September 22, 2005 - May 10, 2006.
  • Season 2 (23 episodes). September 20, 2006 - May 16, 2007.

Do Video Games Cause Violence and Hurt Health?

Sunday, 01.06.2008

Parents and scientists too often think over various habitual hot potatoes like “Do video games cause violence?” and “How to protect children from negative sides of the internet, TV and peer pressure?”

According to AP, Japanese schoolchildren are getting addicted to internet-linking mobiles. The government is worried about how elementary and junior high school students are getting sucked into cyberspace crimes (pedophiles, trickster, etc.). Besides, they spend much time playing video games and chatting all day long.

Out of sight, I can’t but make some examples concerning the internet and video games as well. Have a look around! Do you remember yourself ten years ago as advanced web-users? You weren’t “third-generation” users.

One of the leading analysts of telecommunication market, Jakob Nielsen is of the opinion that folks weren’t accustomed to the internet area in the past.

Recent researches of Jakob Nielsen show that we are (web users) getting more and more selfish, anxious and angry! Also every internet surfer is impatient being on the web. I’m not surprised due to my own experience and knowledge.

According to Jakob Nielsen, instead of dawdling on websites many users want simply to reach a site quickly, complete a task and leave. I’ll say! As for me, I hate waiting for too long, can’t stand dragging my feet.

I’m not going to chewing the fat about it. Following just confirmed facts and results, I came to conclusion that web-users, who correctly use search requests and engines, are less subjected to stress and irritation.

Further to my pros and cons of using stunning breakthroughs of science, I’d like to take notice of video games. Popularity is self-evident. Nobody can ban online distribution and playing.

I’ve already said that video games have positive influence. Thus, they can’t be a reason of violence and cruelty.

In confirmation of these words Harvard researches disproved a considerable impact of video games on children. If you ask somebody whether video games cause violence or have nothing in common with cruelty, remember these researches.

Perhaps the most startling finding (at least for people the likes of Jack Thompson) is that boys that don’t play any video games at all are now considered to be socially inept. A danger sign for boys is “not playing video games at all, because it looks like for this generation, video games are a measure of social competence,” says Kutner and Olsen.

The most important point, however, is that video games activate reward regions of brain in men more than women. Allan Reiss, MD, and his colleagues from Stanford University Medical Center have proved that the part of the brain that generates rewarding feelings is more activated in men than women during video-game play. That’s why men more likely to become “hooked” on video games.

To sum up, I’d like to express a hope that addicted gamers will be able to think for themselves. Unfortunately, therere many inveterate gamers who can’t imagine their lives without such a consuming activity. They just can’t do anything with it. Find aurea mediocriatas, or the golden mean!

Having said that, I remembered some valuable posts on video games at amuseline.com
