Monster Movie is the debut album released by German band Can in 1969. This very album has become really influential in the development of Kraut rock as of a music style.

A few words should be said about the name of this band. The thing is that originally it was called Inner Space, and later it was renamed as The Can until it was known and recognized as simply Can. This name was suggested by Malcolm Mooney who performed all the vocals on this very album Monster Movie. Drummer Jaki Liebezeit later interpreted their band’s name as “Communism, Anarchism, Nihilism”. If you read the first letters only you we get CAN. So that is.

Malcolm Mooney was a truly remarkable member of the band and that was thanks to his voice and the way he performed the songs the band became known and recognized. Many people were and are shocked when hearing his voice. He sounds bizarre and often apparently psychotic. At their live performances with this member people are believed to vomit because of the way he sings and his influence on the audience.

Soon after the album was released Malcolm Mooney who was American returned to the USA on advice of his psychiatrist he suggested that staying in the band is bad for his mental state.

Many who saw the bands video would say that is really barely legal video Monster Movie. The style of this band is actually hard to describe. It is true it gave rise to the Kraut rock but it itself comprised many of the influences.

Can is a mix of garage rock with strong experimental and world music influences. Originally it was planned to be build around ethnic sounds and rhythms however later the plans changed and the band turned to garage rock sound. That even was the reason to leave the group for David Johnson, who was originally among the members of the project.

The group early influences in rock included The Beatles as well as The Velvet Underground and such artists as Jimmy Hendrix. Later they were also influenced by punk rock. It is also worth mentioning that Can are known for improvisation on stage.
