TV Shows Writers Went On Strike

Friday, 14.12.2007

The situation regarding a number of popular TV shows is still around in Hollywood. Everything became aggravated some weeks ago, namely in November. The 2007 Writers Guild of America strike is a strike by the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) and the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) that started on November 5, 2007.

Sure thing TV shows’ writers (over 12,000) want to get a tasty morsel of a cake in the video industry. The Writers Guild’s Strike is against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The last rather like strike was in 1988, lasted 22 weeks and cost the American entertainment industry an estimated 500 million dollars.

  • Reasons? Every three years the Writers Guilds negotiate a new basic contract with the AMPTP by which its members are employed. This is just the right time (November). 3 years is a long period. By this time some aspects of agreement should be reconsidered and adopted to new media rules.
  • Writers’ aims and intensions. The writers did go on strike seeking more extra money. Every issue that matters to writers, including Internet and mobile phones reuse, original writing for new media, DVDs, and jurisdiction, has been ignored. This is completely unacceptable, considers WGA Negotiating Committee

If they gave us everything we had on the table right now, if they gave us everything we wanted—everything—and they then made a deal with the DGA and matched it, which is what they’ll do, and then they made a deal with the Screen Actors Guild and tripled it, which is typically what happens….if they did that—if they gave us everything—on a company-by-company basis they would be giving all of us less than each of their CEOs makes in a year. And in some cases, a lot less“. — WGAW president Patric Verrone

The talks are still a problem of today. And what TV networks (together with with the AMPTP) are thinking about audience and viewership? Folks can’t hardly wait for fave TV shows, talk shows and soap operas. And the prognosis isn’t consoling, particularly for TV viewers in spite of the fact that some of the late night talk shows will come back at the beginning of 2008.

  • What genres are in danger of ending or breaking?

- First off all, talk shows can’t go without monologues and skits. These shows like “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” on the Comedy Central channel, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC, and “The Late Show with David Letterman'’.
- TV series will run out of new episodes at the beginning of 2008.
- Soap operas will appear on TV in several weeks, cause advertisers don’t like them.
- Reality shows are not affected by the strike. Moreover, they will possibly replace some of the scripted series.
- Game shows are mostly unscripted, therefore will not have any changes and delays.
- Animated series usually have a long time to write the scripts, which have at least a year in advance.

It goes without saying how many episodes are left. Last month among them were The Office (NBC), Desperate Housewives (ABC), Heroes (NBC), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Bones (Fox), Supernatural (The CW), Prison Break (Fox), House (Fox), Family Guy (Fox), Family Guy (Fox), The Simpsons (Fox). And this month’s full list look over here.

Still I’m so dying to see my fave TV series (House, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, The Simpons) next year with their writing staffs. I won’t outlive if television shows change greatly. Some out there have an opportunity to get to know more about shows, because now you have more time to watch the entire series of those shows you never watched before for some reason or other.

Watch Futurama Online: Welcome Back Futurama & The Simpsons!

Saturday, 08.12.2007

Recently I was surprised to know that the popular cartoon series Futurama is returning to TV with new episodes in 2008 on Comedy Central. Together with Bender’s Big Score we will see other more adult themed cartoon shows like The Simpsons (released this summer already), Ren and Stimpy, and Family Guy.

Matthew Abram Groening, an American cartoonist and television producer, we have to thank you for birth of The Simpsons and co-creation of Futurama. According to Groening, the animator decided to create something new and came up with a cartoon family, the Simpsons and named the members after his own family, except Bart, which was an anagram of the word brat.

What about Fox network? Why Fox changed their plans and attitude to Futurama? Creators of the cartoon Bender’s Big Score blamed Box (aka Fox) network for a 5 years brake in an indirect way. Check in out in Bender’s Big Score. And now Fox released a whole lot of animated cartoons. Futurama came back with the release of Bender’s Big Score, a straight-to-DVD movie (release date: 27 November 2007).

According to iF, it’s a great ride for the legend of animation Matt Groening who is shepherding The Simpsons Movie into cinemas on July 27 as well as brand new episodes of his cult series Futurama which was unceremoniously cancelled by Fox.

iF: You have said in the past that Fox always loved THE SIMPSONS, but when FUTURAMA was on the network, they always treated it as a bastard step-child. How do you feel now going into this new venture with FUTURAMA?

GROENING: What’s really fun, is every single person who worked on the original show was eager to come back. The entire original cast Katey Sagal, Billy West, John Di Maggio, Maurice LaMarche. They all came on board. The same animation house Rough Draft is back and the same animators are too. And the one’s who didn’t come back, wished they could. We really felt good about that. It was really fun. It was always the underdog show and everybody who worked on it, loved it, so it’s great to come back.

There will be 16 new episodes and four direct-to-DVD movies of Futurama at once on Comedy Central: Bender’s Big Score, The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender’s Game and Into the Wild Green Yonder.

The Faces of Blogging: Tubelounge.com

Saturday, 08.12.2007

This time I’m interviewing Jeremy, an author of TubeLounge.com and other websites he’s working on. TubeLounge is a kind of video aggregator that holds and collects a wide array of various short-length video clips on different subjects (funny videos, basketball videos, cars videos, goals videos, hip hop videos, hidden camera videos, etc.). The site caters to ill-matched video buffs that will jump for joy.

1. Can you tell me a little about your personal background?

I finished my university sooner then I planned because I realized I’m not getting what I expected there. Since I was active on the web for a while, I decided to start making money on the web.

2. What do you do for a living? What do you do full time?

Besides Tubelounge.com I have several more websites I’m working on. Some of them are in the entertainment industry and some of them are pure business - selling products for a commission. Sometimes I do web design and other similar web related things.

3. What’s your university-level education? Degree maybe?

I have a BA as a Marketing Manager.

4. Why did you choose online video industry to be the major topic of your site?

At the time I started it, Metacafe.com had a great thing with giving links on each of their videos if you embed them on your site. That was a starting point for me because I knew I can get traffic from there, with addition of Technorati who sent good number of visitors then.

5. Why did you name the service TubeLounge? Has something in common with YouTube?

Yep, YouTube was inspiration, that’s obvious ;) I feel great when someone types “you tube xxxxxx videos” and lands on my page. Perfect!

6. What is your inspiration to work? Or it’s your hobby?

The possibilities are enormous and that’s what’s more interesting for me. When I get a new idea, implement it and I see it works - it’s the greatest thing ever for me. It’s not just about money, it’s about making something better. When I see that number of pages viewed is bigger then usual, that’s all I need to keep pushing further.

7. How much time do you put into this service on a daily basis?

It depends. I need 2 hours minimum per day. If I want to do some sort of promotion or an upgrade, I definitely need more than that. But so far it’s easy for me to maintain that blog.

8. What is your long term vision with Tubelounge?

More content and not just videos only. If I can drive more traffic to it, I’ll develop it into something more. I want users to interact with the site and between themselves. Right now I am not focused on this site only, so it’s a slow progress.

9. Do you have any parting words?

Everything I did around Tubelounge earned me some good experience. I almost quit from it one time, but then I accidentally stumbled into great way to develop a site and make something more out of it. I’ve learned that persistence is a great ally for achieving something more.

I thank Jeremy for the provided answers!
