Gazprom Media Invests in Video-Sharing Websites

Saturday, 14.07.2007

According to confirmed information the Gazprom Media holding, which owns controlling packages in NTV and TNT television channels, NTV-Plus satellite television and five radio stations, including Ekho Moskvy, is going to buy the video-exchange portal RuTube, which its owners are willing for $5-10 million..

Actually, RuTube ranks among other YouTube clones all over the web that we already mentioned earlier. Gazprom media say that RuTube is highly overpriced at $5 million. And it must be said that this site’s top dollar is no more than 1 megabuck. Specialists claim any company can create the same platform in several times cheaper. But brand shows itself. It is visited by 150,000 unique users per day who watch 20 million videos per month.

RuTube producer Askar Tuganbaev said that there are several potential investors in the site. “Among them are private persons, the Mangrove Capital Partners venture fund and Gazprom Media, which is most likely purchaser,” Tuganbaev said.

Basically, the media giant will be putting $100 million into acquiring popular internet sites over the next few years.
