User-Generated Content and Advertising Kill Mainstream Media

Thursday, 28.06.2007

Just recently I came acroos an interesting article called “Cult of the Amateur”. The author of the book predicts the dismal future of online video. He blames user-generated content and such companies as Google and YouTube in destroying our culture.

“It’s creating an increasingly inane and trivialized culture,” Andrew Keen said. “One imaginary dystopia is that in 25 or 50 years, there will be no mainstream media. There’s nothing inevitable about Hollywood. There’s nothing inevitable about the music industry. The replacement for mainstream media is Twitter, it’s YouTube, it’s Wikipedia … If you read it on the Internet, it likely isn’t true.”

Having said that, it’s important to remember that Google is a powerful advertising company. Andrew Keen, the founder of Audiocafe.com, says that Google is not our friend, but the next generation advertising superpower.

By the way, J. Coen, senior VP-director of forecasting at Universal McCann, said in a media briefing Tuesday, that the outlook for advertising is not very good. Online advertising and search marketing have “violently” impacted established media as the appeal for marketing tactics closely tied to transactions grows.

At the same time, spending on TV, spot TV, syndicated TV, spot radio and newspapers decreased in the first quarter.

In short, the time will show. It’s not who’s right, but who’s left that wins.

See How Easily Your Children Can be Exposed to TV, Videos, Cell Phones and Video Games

Monday, 25.06.2007

“The idea that addiction is somehow a psychological illness is, I think, totally ridiculous. It’s as psychological as malaria. It’s a matter of exposure. People, generally speaking, will take any intoxicant or any drug that gives them a pleasant effect if it is available to them.” (William S. Burroughs)

Have you ever caught yourself at a thought you are addicted to something? Have exposure to all day TV, violent video games, cell phones, chatting, etc.? Just imagine that from day to day you resort to the help of one or another device or service to find satisfaction. This stuff is always at your disposal and and you have no place to hide.

I don’t know for sure but scientists suggest that kids are exposured to a greater extent. Some child experts are asking what age is too young to introduce children to the immediacy of technology. They watch TV, play video games. Television can be a powerful interactive medium that provides parents with unique opportunities to bond with their children

Out of sight the use of portable digital media players (PDMPs), portable video games, and digital cameras saw the largest percentage growth, with the use of cell phones and portable DVD players also growing.

“Kids are drawn to the latest and greatest digital devices just as their parents are,” NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement. “They appear to have no fear of technology and adopt it easily and without fanfare, making these devices a part of their everyday lives.”

By the way, young people reported spending about 6 1/2 hours per day occupied with various media, according to a survey released last year by the Kaiser Family Foundation. And about a quarter of kids said they did more than one media activity at a time

  • listening to music
  • watching TV
  • instant messaging
  • Internet surfing
  • playing video games

with this multitasking adding up to the equivalent of 8 1/2 hours a day of media exposure.

Incessant exposure to “all day TV,” violent video games, instant messaging, and the always accessible cell phone interferes with the development of the psychological traits known to be essential to positive outcomes for children, according to Leah Klungness, Ph.D., psychologist in private practice and co-author of The Complete Single Mother.

“In the past, we only had to be concerned about too much TV exposure. Now we have video games, computers and cell phones. It is overwhelming for young children and creates patterns of behaviors similar to addiction patterns,” said Mali Mann, M.D., adjunct clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stanford University’s School of Medicine.

And it must be said that many parents nowadays grew up on gaming in some form — PC, console, and handheld — and therefore are more comfortable with their kids gaming than the previous generation. Kids often view cell phones as status symbols.

Flixya: Active Users Get 100 % of AdSense Revenue

Friday, 22.06.2007

Admittedly it is impossible to imagine life without adsense on the web. Adsense is one of the components of advertising that makes for better and easier revenue.

Having said that, it is important to mention that Flixya.com allows users to make extra money online via its video-sharing site.

They say: “A social network that puts 100% ad revenue in your pocket. We’ve built the tools for you to share your videos, photos, and blogs. Your place to make friends, earn money, network and more.”

Sounds like a friendly community! Sure thing Flixya ensure that it splits revenue for videos you submit from other networks.

Perhaps the most important point, however, is that Flixya has a rewards program wherein if you accumulate 30,000 and more points (each activity is equivalent to 3-15 points!) you get either a gift certificate or gadgets. You just need to insert your AdSense publisher ID and you get to keep all the ad money generated.

I can’t believe it! Then arises a question: “In what way they are going to earn their living?”
